What is Music?

Music can be described as the art of arranging and combining sounds to be able to be produced by the human voice or by instrument

Copyright can be defined as the exclusive right granted by law to the author of a work to disclose it as his own creation, to reproduce it and to distribute or disseminate it to the public in any manner or by any means and also to authorize others to use the work in specific ways.

What is MCSK?

Defination

This is a statutory body set up by the government of Kenya as a non-profit making society. Established under S.46 of the Copyright and Neighboring Rights Act, No. 7, the Music Copyright Society of Kenya is vested with powers to administer the Copyright Act.This in itself is a great improvement on the old Act which, among other things, did not provide for an Institution to administer the Act.

Functions

 

  1. To promote and protect the interest of authors, performers, transistors, publishers and in particular to collect and distribute any royalties or other remuneration accruing to them in respect of their rights;
  2. to maintain registers of works, productions, and associations of authors, composers, producers of sound recordings, broadcasters and publishers;

What is covered by MCSK?

In a nut shell

The kinds of works covered by MCSK include: literary works i.e. musical compositions. We deal with the authors, composers, publishers but to an extent.

MCSK is a non profit making organization established to collect royalties on behalf of its members and members of its affiliate societies, around the world. Licence fee collected are distributed to members represented by MCSK and its affiliate societies after the deductions of administrations charges.
